Zimbabwe on Friday celebrated reaching 34 years of independence, state functions were held during the day as a way of honouring the struggle that brought about such self-rule to a nation which was under the colonial york for almost a century.

As Independence normally must bring a mood of happiness, and pride in its people,News of the South carried out some interviews with Zimbabweans to get their opinions on such a great day.

Some were saying its a great step as Zimbabweans should honour the day as it marked the success of the struggle marked by heroes with some losing lives, limbs and legs just for this day to have an independent Zimbabwe.

“Its a great day to this country, taking it that some sacrificed thier beloved lives to make this happen,it just did not come easily but a product of sweat, tears and blood of our selfless heroes”,said Nyasha Mandisekwe a nurse.

“This day has been associated with politics of the nation but that`s not it,its a day of every patriotic Zimbabwean,to salute the effort of our heroes in a bid to free us”said Edmore Mutyamaenza.

However the majority of the people interviewed were saying that its hypocricy to celebrate something which is non-existant.

“As much as we honour those who died, but to talk of independence is not true as we have nothing as that in the nation”.

“How many died because of politics from 1980 upto 2014 if we are freed why do we still have these political chains, why are our mouths being zipped through their AIPPA and POSA.

“Is this a fair assertion whilst thousands died in the Gukurahundi post 1980,thousand died crossing Limpopo for survival, some died in xenophobic attacks and in 2008 election,is that freedom, just a joke”,said Kamurai Matimba.

“Freedom which comes with this unemployment, with this high level of corruption, which comes with poor service delivery, which comes with deprived human rights, its not independence, but it was just a change of the colour that rules but the type of the rule is the same if not worse”,said Rutendo Musungata.
