In the spirit of transparency and confidence building between the public and the police – Scotland Yard has unveiled a plan of using high definition body worn video cameras for a year. This unveiled plan coincided with an inquest which ruled out that Mark Duggan from North London who died in 2011 was lawfully killed. The rationale behind this idea is try to restore trust in the police force particularly with ethnic minorities who always cry foul about the manner in which the police deal with them during the stop and search escapades.
Officers will start using these body worn video cameras as early as April. Officers are expected to sample three marques of cameras. This experiment if successful will go a long way in curbing mistrust and at the same time it will gather vital first-hand evidence to incriminate offenders. It will also help to expose any failings of the officer who would have handled the case. In the event of complaints from members of the public the video footage will be used to determine lapses in evidence given. The idea is handy because it will capture the events as they unfold.
The Deputy Assistant Commissioner Nell Basu had this to say: “I’m absolutely convinced it is the right thing to do. There’re officers who want to be believed and want the public to trust them and if that’s what it takes, that’s what we have to do.”
