Barcelona’s Argentine superstar Lionel Messi received his third Golden Shoe award at a colourful ceremony in the Catalan capital on Wednesday and promised a fired up comeback in January next year.
The golden shoe award is given to a player who becomes tops in terms of goals in any league. The trophy is galvanised in golden material.
The Argentine attacker picked up his prize after finishing as the highest league scorer in all of Europe in 2012-13, but insisted that his main objective was to return to the old glory days.
“My aim is to come back even stronger,” he told the audience at the old Damm Brewery in Barcelona.” I am working hard to strengthen my body and I hope to be free from injury when I return.”
Messi is currently suffering from a hamstring problem which will keep him out until January 2014.The attacker netted a whooping 46 La Liga goals last season to scoop the individual accolade.
“I haven’t put any date on my return,” he added.”It depends on how things go and when the time is right, I will come back.” He also said that:”It’s a very special prize and recognition for what the team have been doing over the last few years, I dedicate it to the one I love.
“The Golden Shoe wasn’t my priority when I was in good shape and is even less so now. My focus is on returning from injury.”
