Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-The local media has lost its detached professionalism and is no longer useful for understanding current events according to an analyst.

In a social media message renowned law lecturer Dr Alex Magaisa has lamented the state of the media which has of late been embroiled in the factional fights of ZANU PF.

This, Magaisa says, has resulted in the Fourth Estate losing whatever value it had as an informer and interpreter of current events in the country.

“Trying to understand Zimbabwean politics through headlines is a futile exercise”.

“Oft-times, they conceal more than they reveal”, he said.

Magaisa said the media was no longer a free-standing bystander but an involved part of what is transpiring in the country.

“By and large the media is captured by or is sympathetic to one faction or the other and headlines and content reflect that faction’s agenda”, he added.

Various factions of the ZANU PF internecine battles have used the media to hit back at their perceived opponents with Prof Jonathan Moyo the latest to attack The Herald for siding with Lacoste as part of what he called successionists grand plans to usurp President Mugabe from power.

The Herald itself has not held back and gone on to produce various articles which have seemingly been slanted towards besmirching the standing of the Higher Education Minister whilst glossing over Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa the supposed leader of Lacoste.
