Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South) – The Morgan Tsvangirai led MDC has hailed the youth demonstration held yesterday which saw running battles between the youths and police officers in Harare’s CBD.
In a statement by the party’s youth leader, Happymore Chidziva, the party said the demo was just the beginning with more to come.
Below is the full statement.
“The success of the journey we commenced yesterday is in our hands. What transpired yesterday can only be attributed to the courage and determination of all the young people of this once great nation, who defied the odds to be in the street of Harare”.
“I extend my appreciation and salutation to all the brave foot soldiers of the MDC T Youth Assembly, our political partners and members of the public who participated in yesterday’s cause. Your display of courage and determination stands as a source of encouragement and hope to many”.
“A new Zimbabwe in our lifetime is inevitable. ZEC remains the nemesis of that dream. ZEC’s compromised stature stands between the Zimbabwe we yearn for and the perpetual abject poverty, hence it should be transformed and reformed”
“The independence of ZEC has to be preserved and guaranteed. Rita Makarau has to come clean on whether she will continue being the election commissar of Zanu pf or she will reform herself to be the independent Commissioner of the Electoral body”
“This country has been affected by the issue of legitimacy, because of elections whose out come is contested. It is therefore our cardinal duty to make sure the forthcoming election outcome is uncontested”
“To such effect I call upon all the young people to stand up, define, secure and defend the future of this country by ensuring that ZEC delivers a clean plebiscite. This goes beyond not only the counting exercise but the entire process from registration through to polling and tallying”.
“The trajectory has been set and we are determined to emerge victorious. We should reject the myth and the ancient narrative of outsourcing our future to a tired and old generation, which has remained faithful to its indifferent approach to the youth issues and our future”
“Never again! Will ZEC be allowed to rig elections in favour of Zanu pf. We can’t be victims of rigged elections forever. Our demand for electoral reforms has to be met. We shall not allow ZEC again to preside over flawed elections”
