Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-MDC-T has been abandoned by its founders and funders despite its being the only real opposition party in the country, a senior government official has said.

The Morgan Tsvangirai-led party is allegedly battling internal frictions which have created divisions leading to the selection of two more Vice Presidents to bring the number of VP’s to three, whilst its foreign support has dwindled.

In a social media statement Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo has scoffed at remarks that he should join MDC-T saying the party, besides being the only real opposition unlike other individual parties such as Mujuru’s ZimPF and Biti’s PDP, is way past its sell-by date.

“(MDC-T is) the one real & treacherous opposition party and whose fortunes are in the dustbin of history, abandoned by its white founders and funders!”, he said.

Moyo said due to the absence of any viable partners for the MDC-T talk of an opposition coalition in 2018 is not realistic.

“A grand coalition in Zim is by definition untenable because there are many opposition individuals but only one real opposition party, MDC-T!”

“What is possible in Zimbabwe is a non-grand coalition of opposition individuals whose ideology is to share positions before the elections!”

“The first rule in electoral strategy is to distinguish between phantom & real opposition. A grand coalition of individuals is no opposition”, he said.

Moyo’s statements buttress the growing belief amongst many people that an opposition coalition is being slowed down due to individualistic tendencies by many members in opposition politics who are looking out for themselves.

Various opposition party leaders have clashed with Biti being counted out of the coalition by Tsvangirai’s spokesperson, unless he showed respect for the veteran opposition leader.

A smaller opposition coalition called Coalition of Democrats (CODE) has meanwhile been making more progress with its ‘we are equal’ approach to negotiations bearing fruits after last week’s coming in of two more parties to join the already existing seven.

Godfrey Dzikiti its current Chairman said they were placing no emphasis on numbers or names so as to make progress on matters of principles.

Cabals that, when they’re not in power, capture & abuse state institutions against perceived enemies, will do worse should they be in power!
