PRESS STATEMENT
Issued By Honourable Lilian Timveos, Alternative Minister and MDC-T Spokesperson for Home Affairs.
The Movement for Democratic Change welcomes SADC Heads of State and Government to Zimbabwe for the Summit scheduled to be held between August 17 and 18, 2014.
We are totally appalled that Zimbabwe is not on the official agenda of this meeting, considering all the violations of SADC resolutions over the years and especially the flawed election held last year.
The elections held in Zimbabwe on 31 July 2013 were shambolic and obviously manipulated in favour of Zanu PF and there is evidence to that effect.
However, what worries us most is that Zimbabwe is once again a disaster waiting to happen. It is obvious that if that happens, it will affect the whole of SADC.
The two million jobs promised by President Robert Mugabe during political campaigns in 2013 have not materialized. Human trafficking remains a major concern, with the United States government imposing sanctions against regime officials in Zimbabwe because they are involved in human and sex trafficking.
The government and party of Mr Mugabe has taken the occasion of the SADC Heads of State and Government for its propaganda value. Zimbabwe is far from stable and the MDC encourages regional leaders to use this summit to focus attention on the real crisis in SADC,
which is Zimbabwe.
As Alternative Minister and Spokesperson for Home Affairs, I would like to highlight the issue of corruption within the Zimbabwe Republic Police and regional police forces generally.
Where has all of Zimbabwe’s diamond revenue gone and what is SADC doing about it, considering that some of the money has been laundered through SADC countries?
These are issues for which Zimbabweans need answers and we hope that SADC can use its presence in Zimbabwe to assert its principles.
Issued By Honourable Senator Lilian Timveos, Alternative Minister and Spokesperson for Home Affairs, Movement for Democratic Change.
