Harare (NewsoftheSouth) – The abduction saga of the MDC Alliance trio of legislator Joanna Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova continues, with the trio denied bail Monday by Harare Magistrate Bianca Makwande.
In denying them bail, the state argued that there was overwhelming evidence that the trio would skip trial.
The three women will reappear in court on 26 June, 2020 for routine remand.
The three, denied bail as President Mnangagwa was “humbling” himself before God, and asking for the forgiveness of sins, were arrested last week on allegations of communicating and publishing false statements against the State.
The State alleged that the opposition activists choreographed and stage-managed an abduction, accusing State agents of kidnapping and dumping them at Muchapondwa Village in Bindura, Mashonaland Central.
Mamombe and her two compatriots were arrested soon after their release from a private medical facility where they had been receiving treatment after their ordeal at the hands of suspected State agents.
The Government, through the Home and Foreign ministries has denied any involvement, instead accusing the trio of being part of a wider opposition plot to discredit and dent its international image.
However, amidst the condemnation that Government faced following the denials, Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), a statutory body mandated with receiving and investigating complaints of human rights abuses confirmed that the three were abducted.
The three, through their lawyers, will appeal against the ruling in the High Court
