Mashonaland East province claimed the National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) cross country and track and field athletics championships for the fourth year running in a two day competition hosted by Peterhouse College in Zimbabwe.
The host province underlined their dominance of schools athletics with a commanding performance which yielded 30 gold medals, 17 silver and 17 bronze.
Manicaland also successfully defended their second position garnering 16 gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze medals. Masvingo province made up for their poor showing last year coming third with 13 gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze medals.

Also moving up were the boys and girls from Mashonaland West who amassed 11 gold, 19 silver and 11 bronze medals to claim fourth position.
The biggest movers were Bulawayo who recovered from anchoring the medals table last year to fifth position with 11 gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Matebeleland South came sixth with 9 gold, 19 silver and 10 bronze medals. Harare’s athletics woes mounted with another dismal performance which yielded a paltry 8 gold, 5 silver and 18 bronze medals to finish in seventh position.
The Harare athletes were so disappointing that heads are likely to roll in the province’s athletics set up.
Midlands finished eighth with eight gold medals, three of whom came from female athlete of the competition Maryjoy Mudyaravanji who won the 1500, 800 and 3000m races.
The province also had three silver and five bronze medals. Perennial underachievers Mashonaland Central were ninth with four gold, eight silver and six bronze medals. Anchoring the table were Matebeleland North also with four gold, seven silver and nine bronze medals.
The competition was also used to select athletes in the under-18 years category who will represent the country in the Confederation of Southern African Schools (COSASA) competition to be hosted by Botswana in May. The COSASA competition which was hosted by Zimbabwe last year’s targets both primary and secondary schools athletes in the under-13 and under-18 age groups.
