Gulu. Police in Gulu District have arrested a police constable over smoking and being in possession of marijuana, an illicit drug locally known as ‘bhangi.’

He was arrested over the weekend at his home in Police Barracks in Gulu Municipality after his colleagues tipped their bosses of his strange behaviour during working hours.

The suspect’s house was searched last Saturday on orders of Aswa Region police commander Wilson Kwanya and marijuana was recovered packed in a Polythene bag.

Mr Kwanya confirmed the constable’s arrest. He added that he is still being detained at the Gulu Central Police Station.

“We acted professionally and swiftly to arrest the suspect on learning about his unethical behaviour. As police, we condemn such acts by our officers who should have acted as examples to the public,” he said.

He said the suspect’s file has already been sanctioned by the resident state attorney and anytime he will be arraigned in court to face charges of using and being in possession of illegal drugs.

Mr Kwanya said the arrest is an example that the police acts in the interest of law irrespective of whether one is in the force or not.
