Mandela Will For Family, Friends, ANC, Staff And Schools
The late South African President Nelson Mandela has left his $4.1 million (£2.5million) estate to family members, the ruling African National Congress, former staff and several local schools, according to a reading of his 40 page will on Monday.
There were fears that the testament would spark more squabbling amongst Mandela`s large family of 30 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mandela also left £5,000 to each of four other educational institutions, for bursaries and scholarships.
Close personal staff each get £2,700 and schools the anti-apartheid hero attended are due to receive over £5,000.
Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke told reporters the division of the estate – provisionally valued at 46 million rand ($4.1 million) excluding royalties – had been accepted by Mandela’s family earlier on Monday with no contestation so far.
Mandela’s third wife, Graca Machel, may waive her claims to the estate, Moseneke said at a news conference where he summarized parts of Mandela’s 40-page will.
Over £800,000 plus royalties will be given to family trust.
The ruling African National Congress (ANC) will receive some royalties, to be used at the discretion of the party’s executive committee to disseminate information about the principles and policies of the ANC.
The will can be contested within 90 days.
