Mpumalanga, South Africa. (News of The South) – Police in Mpumalanga have arrested the provincial leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Collen Sidibe. This after Sidibe led residents to illegally occupy vacant land at Hillsview in White River. Police managed to disperse the crowd.

Provincial EFF spokesperson Sabelo Nkambule says the campaign to occupy land will continue.

“Yes, is true that he has been arrested. Initially they said they are charging him with inciting public violence. We we are not going to stop until we occupy that land so it has just been suspended for today,” says Nkambule.

Mpumalanga residents continue to invade land. The residents claim that government has failed to build them low cost houses on the vacant land for over ten years.

The residents came from areas such as Kabokweni and Gemu near Hazyview. They came in numbers to allocate themselves land. However, a large number of police did not allow the residents to invade. The residents allege that government has failed to build them houses.

This is a second land invasion led by the EFF. Last week the EFF led a group of people from Matsulu and Kaapmuiden to invade near the Nkomazi Toll Plaza.

MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Pat Ngomane, says illegal land occupation will not be tolerated.

“Let them know that at no stage can you get into a land which belongs to somebody without the interest of that particular somebody. From time to time we are going to try our best to negotiate with them but if they don’t listen we will be forced to arrest them.”
