Blantyre, Malawi. (News of The South)- Malawi’s meteorological department has warned the general public of possible floods from the 5th to the 9th of January 2020.
Malawians have been urged to take precautionary measures such as moving to high grounds when water levels have started rising, avoiding crossing flooded rivers and not seeking shelter under trees and weak infrastructures.
“Following the heavy rains that the country has been receiving over the past few days, the Malawi nation should brace for another wave of rainfall, which is expected over most areas in the centre, south and lakeshore areas as from Sunday 5th to Thursday 9th January 2020.
This is due to the presence of deep low pressure in association with an active Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) currently oscillating over the south and central areas of the country.
The anticipated heavy rains which will be accompanied by strong winds and lightning are also likely to increase the possibility of floods which will therefore lead to further damage, loss of property and endanger lives over most of the centre, south and the lakeshore areas,” read the statement issued by Jolamu Nkhokwe, Director of Climate Change and Meteorological Service.
Since late December 2019, Malawi’s capital of Lilongwe has been experiencing heavy rainfall which has resulted in flash floods.
According to Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) over 1 500 people from around 400 households have since been affected by flooding in Lilongwe.
