Lilongwe, Malawi. (News of The South) – Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has told teachers to go back to work on Monday the 27th of January as the nationwide strike which began on the 20th of January has now been suspended.
According to TUM’s president, Willie Malimba, government has deposited December salaries in the accounts of teachers who had been removed from the payroll for not submitting national identity cards.
“TUM is aware that some teachers have not yet received their salaries and we are requesting all those who might not get their December salaries by the 28th of January 2020 to meet their respective District Education Managers or District Commissioners for assistance,” said Malimba.
Yesterday some teachers stormed into the ministry of Education, Science and Technology’s coffers in protest over unpaid December salaries.
In other parts of Malawi, learners blocked roads and pelted vehicles with stones in violent protests demanding government to pay teachers their December salaries so that classes could resume.
