Malawi Opposition Boycott The 55th Independence Celebrations
By Draxon Maloya.
Malawi (News of The South) Malawi’s opposition political parties have boycotted this year’s Independence celebrations in which the country is celebrating 55 years of self government from the colonialism of Britain.
Government has organized a Celebration ceremony at the Kamuzu stadium in the city of Blantyre where various activities such as prayers, military displays, dances and a football match involving the commercial city giants Nyasa Big Bullets and Beforward Wanderers will spice the occasion.
The spokespersons for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the United Transformation Movement (UTM) have made it clear that they will not be party to this year’s Independence celebrations.
“We cannot be part of the Independence celebrations organized by the government whose legitimate we are challenging in a court of law” said the UTM spokesperson, Chidanti Malunga.
And on his part the MCP spokesperson Maurice Munthali said “It is very unfortunate that some greedy politicians are busy organising events when the country is going through numerous socioeconomic challenges.”
Malawi attained Independence in 1964 and Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda became the president of the country only to be ousted in 1994 in the first multiparty general election when the United Democratic Front (UDF)’s Bakiri Muluzi ascended to the seat of president.
