Malawian President Joyce Banda has dissolved her cabinet.
On Thursday Malawian government issued a statement announcing the dissolution of the cabinet. “Her Excellency Dr Joyce Banda, President of the Republic of Malawi, in exercise of the powers conferred upon her by Section 94(1) and Section 95(2) of the Constitution of the republic of Malawi, has today, 10 October 2013 dissolved cabinet.
According to a statement captured by Malawi voice all responsibilities of cabinet ministers have reverted to Joyce Banda’s office, up until a time she will appoint a new one.
“Following the dissolution of the cabinet, all ministers’ matters will revert to the Presidency through Controlling Officers.
As stated by the Malawi Voice the President’s move follows continued reports of some of her cabinet Ministers’ involvement in one of the biggest financial scandal to hit Malawi government since the attainment of democracy.
It went on to state that some of Ministers highly linked to the scandal are Finance Minister KenLi-penga,Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara and Vice President Khumbo Kachali.
President indicated that she will not shield anyone from the corruption charges leveled against some of the top government officials.
The development has also followed on pressure that has been maintained on Banda to fire Lipenga and other top officials to pave way for the smooth investigations.
Reacting to the sacking of all ministers, University of Malawi political commentator Dr Henry Chingaipe was quoted in the Inyasa Times saying that it is a welcome development considering that Malawians have been crying for the cabinet to be dissolved and to have others axed following the ‘cash-gate scandal which implicates some cabinet Ministers.
“My view is that President Joyce Banda is governing more seriously and responding to the wishes of the people in terms of cleaning the house in order.
