Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – Major General Emmanuel Matatu has been appointed as the new Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), and has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. Lieutenant Matatu replaces Sanyatwe who was moved to Sports Ministry.




President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), has promoted Major General Emmanuel Matatu to Lieutenant General. Leutenant Emmanuel Matatu has a long and distinguished career within the Zimbabwean military. He participated in the Second Chimurenga (Zimbabwean Liberation War).
He attended an officer’s course at the Zambian Military Academy at Kohima. He has in interesting career which has seen him rise 5
through the ranks, with promotions from Colonel to Brigadier General in 2001, and then to Major General in 2016.

He has held important positions within the army, including Chief of Staff administration staff, and has also served at the Zimbabwe national Defence University. Information from the sunday news also indicates that he was one of the young men who joined the armed struggle, and attended officer cadet training in Kohima Zambia.

Lieutenant General Emmanuel Matatu Assumes Command of Zimbabwe National Army
In a significant development within the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Lieutenant General Emmanuel Matatu as the new Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA). This appointment comes with a promotion, elevating Major General Matatu to the rank of Lieutenant General.
Lieutenant General Matatu brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in the Zimbabwean military for many years. His background includes participation in the country’s liberation struggle, and he has progressed through the ranks, demonstrating his dedication and expertise.

His career includes time spent at the Zambian Military Academy at Kohima, and he has held key positions such as Chief of Staff administration staff. His experience also includes time at the Zimbabwe National Defence University. This appointment marks a new chapter for the ZNA, with Lieutenant General Matatu now responsible for leading the nation’s army.
