HARARE(News of the South) MDC-Alliance spokesperson Fadzai Mahere on Thursday blamed corruption for the current economic and political status the country is mired in.
During a Press conference in Harare on the current national crisis, Mahere told journalists that corruption was killing the country.
“In 2017, US$2.7 billion disappeared under Command Agriculture and of that US$2.7 billion, US$1.5 billion was withdrawn on a single day on December 27, 2017,” the MDC Alliance spokesperson said.
“In 2018, US$3.5 billion was unaccounted for under the Command Agriculture. We await the next Auditor General’s report but anticipate this pattern of looting by the State will continue,” Mahere said.
“Seven million and seven hundred thousand Zimbabweans face food insecurity in a nation of approximately 15.6 million people. This means an estimated 5.5 people in rural Zimbabwe and a further 2.2 million people in urban Zimbabwe will face food insecurity over the next year,” she said.
“When the MDC trio demonstrated against this hunger, they were abducted, tortured and sexually assaulted. They were persecuted for speaking out on behalf of 7.7 million Zimbabweans. Corruption is literally starving us,” Mahere added.
“Despite the over US$6 billion that has been poured into Command Agriculture, Zimbabwe faces what the United Nations has described as its worst hunger crisis in a decade. The United Nations went a step further to classify this crisis as “man-made”,” she said.
