Love Thy Neighbour

By Masimba Mukichi.

It’s only the Limpopo River that divides them
It’s only the imaginary border that separates them
They’re people from the same womb- Gondwanaland.
True descendants of the Khoikhoi, the San and the Bantu
Congolese, Nigerians, Mozambicans and Zimbabweans they belong
Mzansi wake up and smell the coffee, xenophobia is cancerous,
It’s a rat poison its destroying livelihoods, its destroying families,
Why destroy shops of those trying to earn an earnest Rand?
Don’t squash them like flies for just doing better than you.
They are not cannon fodder, they are not guinea pigs.
All humanity’s blood is red and is so precious to be spilled in jest.
To be an immigrant is not a curse, it’s the rebirth of working together.
Money knows no ethnicity, it embraces diversity.
Immigrants are strivers not shirkers
They belong, they raise the Mzansi flag
Did the crow choose to be black?
Did the leopard choose to have spots?
Did the stork choose to be a migratory bird?
Not at all, circumstances made it a roaming bird.
Mzansi you’re the jewel of Africa, be accommodative,
Be tolerant, halt this xenophobia. Let it die young,
and learn to love thy neighbour who looks unto you
as the mother hen who must protect all it’s chicks.
