News of the South HARARE – Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National housing together with the Ministry of Health and Child Care yesterday launched an International and Domestic Appeal for assistance on the cholera outbreak that has hit Harare and now spreading to other provinces.
Speaking at the appeal launch in Harare yesterday, Local Government Minister Hon. July Moyo said government has since released $6.7 million dollars for this cause while a portion of this amount will be channelled to the city council for infrastructural repairs
He added that his ministry together with Ministry of Health and Child Care has engaged private partners to supply affected areas with clean water assist in refuse collection and mend burst sewer pipes.
“Our appeal to you is in two parts; we will be appealing for material and financial support so that we can plant the gap that we have in our funding in the health sector.
“You know that our government is doing something but there is a gap.
“Our second appeal is also to cover the gap that is there even though we have got some funding from government to assist in upgrading sewer systems and upgrading the water system, there is still a gap, then there is the question of refuse collection which we need and solid waste management which we need; and these we are appealing to yourselves,” Hon Moyo said.
Government has also released $500 million to start cleanup campaigns to improve sanitation in the capital and the ban on vendors in the CBD has been intensified until the outbreak has been contained.
“It has become imperative that all types of vending be banned with immediate effect.
“The joint operation system has since been activated to assist in the removal of the vending public.
“May I also take this opportunity to urge a few way ward vendors who are playing hide and seek with the law enforcement agents to comply,” said Hon Moyo.
He also urged the police to amicably dismantle stalls from where vendors with permits were operating from.
Hon Moyo said the compilation of a consolidated cholera outbreak response plan has made it possible to highlight sustainable immediate, medium and long term solutions to such outbreaks.
