Lesotho. (News of The South) – The institution of health in Lesotho has dismissed the case of an Ebola outbreak in the mountainous kingdom.
The International Health Regulations (IHR) said there was no Ebola in Lesotho rather what transpired was a preparatory assessment exercise that was meant to test the level of preparedness of the Lesotho health officials in the event that there was an Ebola outbreak.
According to the exercise, the woman was rushed to hospital where tests confirmed she had contracted the virus.
“This was first Small Scale Field Simulation Exercise, conducted to test the preparedness and response to the Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
It was undertaken to test the capacities in terms of risk communication, coordination, communication, surveillance, case management, preparedness and response,” said IHR in a statement.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced on Tuesday that it had prequalified the first Ebola vaccine.
“Five years ago, we had no vaccine and no therapeutics for Ebola. With a prequalified vaccine and experimental therapeutics, Ebola is now preventable and treatable,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General.
