Lilongwe. (News of The South) – Police at Thondwe in southern Malawi district of Zomba have arrested the Area Development Committee (ADC) for Traditional Authority Chikowi for stealing relief items meant for those who have been affected by cyclone Idai and the devastating rains that have left scores of people destitute.
The ADC chairperson, Gevious Jisa 37 and some his committee member Kassam Sanjira 45 were apprehended by the police following a tip from the community.
Speaking to News of the South, the assistant public relations officer at the Eastern Region Headquarters, Constable Tionge Kayenda the ADC chairperson and his colleagues connived and created ghost workers on the list of beneficiaries so as to benefit more from the relief items.
“The two, on 17th March 2019 at one of the villages here in Zomba are alleged to have connived and stole 50 bags of relief maize meant for hunger stricken families and following the report, police managed to recover 21 bags which shall be presented as evidence in court,” Kayenda said.
The two are expected to appear before court soon where they will answer a case of theft which is contrary to section 278 of the country’s penal code.
Meanwhile the police in the region are appealing to the public to see to it that relief items are only distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
