Malaei (News of The South) – Lack of capacity building is said to be one of the major contributing factor towards poor performance of most Community Based Organisations (CBO) in the Malawi.
Speaking during the opening of the two day training workshop for the CBOs under the Mzuzu SOS Children’s village on Monday, the Director of Programs of the NGO Board of Malawi Kamwana Muyaya said most NGOs in the country don’t have vibrant governance structures.
Muyaya said there is a need for the CBOs to have partners from which they might learn and build capacity which can distinguish the roles of their board and management.
“Most NGOs in the country don’t have vibrant governance structures and some of them do not even know why they are put in that responsibility, that is why you find that the performance of most boards are not up to that level due to lack of technical expertise,” Muyaya said.
In his remarks the Assistant Director of Health and Social Services at the Mzuzu City Council, Mabvuto Mpayi commended the Mzuzu SOS Children’s Village for organising a training workshop for CBO Leaders which is one way of human development.
“We find this training very important to train partners working with the city council who should know their operations and responsibilities, so that they can provide rightful direction in their operations,” said Mpayi.
The programs Director for SOS Children’s Village Malawi, Mzuzu Program George Khondowe said they organised the workshop to equip the CBO leaders with skills that will enable them to manage their roles in their daily operations.
“At SOS we are working on the basis of the 2030 strategy which is a global strategy aimed at strengthening families, in which they are working with different partners hence engaging the CBOs, so for Mzuzu program we noticed that CBOs lack the capacity in terms of the operations of the board there is no clear demarcation of roles with the board,” Khondowe.
There are a total of 734 NGOs are operating in the country which is one way of ensuring that there is there is adequate attention to issues affecting the social and economic profile of the vulnerable.
