Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – In a video address released on Saturday, King Munhumutapa has reiterated that Zimbabwe is now a monarchy under his rule. King Munhumutapa known as Timothy Chiminya, stated that a High Court order granted on September 30, 2022, legally establishes his authority as the rightful King Munhumutapa.

Displaying a document, the court order, Mr. Chiminya said it was served to the Registrar General and the Anti-Corruption Commission, with signatures from Deputy Registrar Nyikadzino acknowledging receipt. He asserted that this order prevents any interference with the title or matters concerning King Munhumutapa.

Mr. Chiminya further elaborated on the lineage of the Munhumutapa, tracing it back to the “Vaera Moyo” (Shona for “of the heart clan”) and naming a succession of ancestral spirits culminating in his current possession by the spirit of Munhumutapa. He explicitly stated that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is the President of Zimbabwe and not the King Munhumutapa, urging the public to recognize the distinct roles.

Referencing recent actions by Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, Mr. Chiminya described them as futile, “playing with mud where there is no water.” He argued that the High Court order, being an order by consent, cannot be appealed, thus solidifying his monarchical status.

King Munhumutapa alluded to the plane and helicopter crash involving President Mnangagwa’s delegation during celebrations at Great Zimbabwe in October 2023. He suggested this incident was a consequence of failing to consult him before visiting the historical site.

Mr. Chiminya also recounted his past imprisonment, stating that being bitten by bed lice (“tsikidzi”) was a symbolic event signifying the insects’ anger at the mistreatment of the King. He presented this as another sign reinforcing his royal status.

Declaring that “Zimbabwe was now a monarchy and will rule Zimbabwe,” Mr. Chiminya addressed the so-called Mutapa fund, demanding that it be controlled by the King. He expressed ignorance about its current management and issued a stern warning to those in control, asserting his authority to govern the country.

Furthermore, Mr. Chiminya addressed traditional leaders from the “Vaera Shumba” (Lion Clan) of Churumhanzu, Charumbira, and Murambwi, stating that they are chiefs, not kings, implying their subservience to the Munhumutapa lineage. He also touched upon the origins of the people of Matebeleland, suggesting their roots in South Africa’s Zululand and their inclusion within the Kingdom of Zimbabwe under the Munhumutapa.

These pronouncements are likely to stir significant debate and raise constitutional questions within Zimbabwe. The claims of a legally established monarchy contradict the current republican framework of the nation. It remains to be seen how the government and the public will respond to these assertions.
