The Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) blamed arsonists for the fire at Tsavo National Park.

The fire was put out by local volunteers together with the military.

Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s biggest in the country and home to hundreds of animals such as lions, buffalos and elephants.

This fire came at a terrible time when the Kenyan government was trying to revive its tourism industry which has lost $1bn in revenue due to the coronavirus.

KWS described the fire as “horrendous” and thanked the hundreds of volunteers trying to put out the fire.

“Your efforts and sacrifices are appreciated beyond words,” KWS posted on Twitter.

The KWS added that a team will be on standby for the next 24 hours to monitor the area for any subsequent incident.
