London, (News Of The South) Kenyan athletes are reported to have been taking drugs and the East African Nation was recently tasked by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) to prove they were tacking athletics cheats.

They have however failed to meet the deadline and this may mean facing a ban from competing in the forth coming Olympics in Rio De Janeiro later this year.

Several Kenyan athletes have tested positive for drugs when tests were conducted.

Kenya has failed to provide the assurances that the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) is seeking, this means they will be placed on a ‘watch-list’ of nations at risk of breaching the agency’s code of conduct.

It is well known that Kenyan athletes come tops in long distance races and will be given a time frame of two months in which they are expected to bring in new legislation and funding or face being declared non compliant with WADA.

A Wada statement said while “some progress has been made” with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya, there is “still a lot of work required”.

In 2015 Kenya won most of the medals at the World Championships in Beijing when they scooped 7 Gold medals but the bribery and doping allegations stand to spoil their reputation.

Statistics prove that since 2011 more than 40 Kenyan athletes have failed drug tests while 2016 indicates 18 athletes have so far been suspended for doping.

Among them is Rita Jeptoo, who has won the Boston and Chicago marathons, while Lilian Moraa Mariita was given the longest ban – eight years for taking steroids.

Three officials at Kenya`s Athletics governing body have also been suspended following accusations they were involved in corruption linked to Doha’s successful bid for the 2019 World Championships.
