Nairobi, Kenya — Kenya’s national airline, Kenya Airways, is preparing to increase its number of flights after geopolitical tensions in the Middle East — particularly the ongoing war between Iran and allied forces — drove passenger demand to unprecedented levels, the carrier said.

The airline reported that seat occupancy on several of its long‑haul routes has surged to an almost full capacity of about 99 percent, a direct result of travellers seeking alternatives to disrupted Middle East corridors. This spike follows airspace closures and rerouting across key aviation hubs in the region, forcing airlines and passengers alike to seek alternative routes.

Record Demand Amid Geopolitical Turmoil
Kenya Airways acting CEO George Kamal confirmed the sharp rise in demand began in February and has continued through March, substantially lifting load factors from typical levels. With many carriers reducing or cancelling services through the Middle East — often a crucial link between Europe, Asia, and Africa — passengers have increasingly chosen Kenya Airways’ flights to destinations in Europe, the United States and Asia.

The airline has already flown approximately 400 repatriation passengers from affected areas on special services and is considering additional repatriation flights as needed. Efforts to secure further capacity are underway to ease pressure on full flights and accommodate demand peaks.

Industry Context and Challenges
The spike in demand comes amid broader industry disruption. The Iran conflict has resulted in the closure of airspace over major Middle Eastern countries, forcing airlines to adopt longer, costlier routes and reshuffle timetables. Analysts say these changes are reshaping flight patterns globally, with carriers’ strategies evolving rapidly to cope with shifting demand and higher operational costs.

Despite the surge in passenger numbers on some routes, Kenya Airways is operating against a backdrop of broader financial challenges. The airline recorded a substantial pre‑tax loss for the 2025 financial year, citing supply chain issues and aircraft capacity constraints as key factors. Nonetheless, the current spike in demand offers a strategic opportunity to boost revenues and optimise network capacity.

As global air travel continues to adjust to shifting geopolitical realities, Kenya Airways’ response underscores the dynamic nature of the aviation sector — where flexible scheduling and expanded services can capitalise on sudden demand shifts while offering alternatives for travellers navigating disrupted routes.
