Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere has attacked US President Donald Trump after the withdrawal of the US from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change saying it increases the burden on poor nations.

President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the agreement on Thursday in the second abrogation of an international accord after his pullout from the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The move is part of his campaign pledge to abrogate the Paris Agreement.

In a speech to the nation Trump stated that “One by one we are keeping the promises we made to the American people.”

However Kasukuwere has ridiculed the move which he says leaves the poor nations to bear the brunt of richer nations, whilst accusing Trump of a poor type of nationalism.

“Trump is engaged in destructive nationalism”.

“Deal painstakingly agreed to by all nations and meant to make the world a better place ~ dead!”

“Paris Climate Deal reversal : This is sad and regrettable”.

“Poor nations will bear the brunt of climate change . Sad day .Withdraw!!”, he said.

The withdrawal of the US has been championed by the President’s chief strategist Stephen Bannon, and others like arch conservative climate change sceptic Myron Ebell of the libertarian Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), and head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Scott Pruitt.

According to media reports the decision to abandon the agreement puts the US at odds with 197 countries – 147 of who have ratified the Convention.

“I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittbsurgh not Paris,” Mr Trump said, on live television from the Rose Garden at the White House.

Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement was a “reassertion of America’s sovereignty” he insisted, excoriating the accord for allowing China and India to continue raising their emissions while at the same time being paid by the US through the Green Fund which compensates developing countries.

But the President left the door open to “re-entering” or “renegotiating” the agreement, or negotiating a fresh agreement, on fairer terms for the US.
