CHAMBA SMOKE OF THE DAY
By Dr Raymond Chamba.
Zimbabwe’s participation in the Mozambican conflict should be seen for what it offers- an amazing economic opportunity. Please don’t over moralize on this and see it through the eyes of real politik.
War is the only “full employment act”. Zimbabwe has had many years of uninterrupted peace and harvested nothing but more misery. This engagement will provoke retaliation and inevitable expansion of conflict and that’s not necessarily bad as that gives us a great case for a permanent security zone into Mozambique right up to the sea
Absolutely. The idea of a land swap with Mozambique to guarantee and give us a swath of land right up to our own new port or quite possibly federation must be actively and aggressively explored. Let’s have a novel re-awakening of the old Munhumutapa Empire.
After all, we were just one country and are one people and so should the possibility of reviving the old Federation of Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe as a preamble to true one government in Southern Africa.
Conflict and great crisis has a way of spurring human beings into greater innovation and this would be no exception. The engagement offers us an opportunity to come to the defence of our nation state, and if handled improperly will implode in the faces of authorities as it liberalizes the availability of weapons that can be used to fight the same government if it chooses to make it another private looting mission.
This is another example of COVID-19 accelerated and enabled social dislocations and disruptions sweeping across Africa and the world. If we see the answer to this as one united country, this can only herald a new brave era of closer regional economic and political intergration.
War does not always equate to a loss of national resources unless it’s a public war for private benefit. Let’s rally to the defence of our sovereign states as we also refine and expedite moves for common response mechanisms around the subregion.
