JOHANNESBURG (News Of The South) – The South African President Jacob Zuma’s guard was gunned down in the early hours of Sunday in KwaZulu-Natal.
Sergeant Mzwakhe John Magwaza, who was stationed at the Presidential Protection unit was shot dead by unknown assailants. He was asleep in inside his rondavel when unknown people set it alight. His neighbour who is also a policeman went to assist with other people from the same area. On Monday the police said, “When Magwaza was busy explaining to his rescuers how he tried to call his relatives with no success, as well as highlighting that there were people who wanted him dead, shots were fired at Magwaza. He tried to run for his life unfortunately his lifeless body was found underneath his car. The suspects also fled the scene with his service pistol.”
The motive of the killing is still unknown. The National Head of the elite police, the Hawks Lt Gen Mthandazo Ntlemeza said the killing of the policeman as an attack to the security of the state. Lt Gen Mthandazo Ntlemeza also said, “We are saddened by the murder of one of our own. He was dedicated to the safety of the state and that of fellow South Africans. The people responsible for his death must know that we are out to get them. We urge anyone with information about the killing or the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward and help us restore justice.”
KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu’s bodyguards, Xolani Nkosi was also shot dead in July this year in the same area where Zuma’s guard was shot in eNtumeni.
