Things are not looking good for the 68-year old and former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo as his plea to be freed whilst waiting for trial over crimes against humanity was thrown out by the International Criminal Court on Tuesday.
Gbagbo is facing charges of crimes against humanity when more than 2,000 people died in a post-election violence after he refused to step down for the people’sfavourite, Alassane Quattara.
“The post-election conflict killed at least 3,000 people,” reports Aljazeera.
He is also said to be responsible for murders, rape and detention of supporters of his political rivalry however, he insists he is innocent.
The proclamation by the court’s Appeals Chamber in Hague shattered hopes for Gbagbo who expected to be freed whilst waiting for trial like his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta.
Gbagbo was arrested in Ivory Coast in April 2011 and brought before the ICC eight months later.
