Harare, Zimbabwe. (News Of The South) -Recent reports seem to point out that Jonathan Moyo, the minister of Higher and Tertiary Education is in trouble over corruption allegations. While many have been pleased by the recent development, hoping that he would be incarcerated for his deeds.
This doesn’t really do justice to it all, as there is a lot of corruption yet to be curb. In fact, Moyo’s case, doesn’t even do much in terms of putting an end to the pandemic, destructive force of corruption in Zimbabwe, which begs the question, is this even about corruption?
Corruption has turned out to be a big problem in Zimbabwe. So much so that even those tasked to catch those who are corrupt are even corrupt themselves. Thus this move has been hailed by many, but something about it smells funny. It doesn’t seem to be the full story. It seems to mask a hidden agenda. And who be the driving force behind this one? And why?
Not so long ago, Joice Mujuru, then the Vice President of Zimbabwe was accused of many things, including corruption and incompetence, a move that saw her losing her Vice Presidency for both the country and the ruling party. And she has gone to form her own party. Is this another way of driving Moyo out of ZANU PF? Maybe.
The dynamics of the Zimbabwean politics are always changing. Everyone seems to be vying for the top position, the Presidency, causing factions to spring out of the major political parties, with almost similar agendas but different leadership. Surely there are some factions in the ruling party, with most people eager to take over the top spot after Mugabe. So could this be the reason for the recent Moyo’s troubles? Could he be on his way out?
With his intellect, Moyo can make or break anyone’s political career, and while he has been quite an asset for the ruling party, he has been a liability at times, pushing for his own agenda, having once contested for the Vice Presidency post, a move that saw him losing his Tsholotsho seat in the ZANU PF. Surely even he wants to be president one day.
Surely the demise of Jonathan Moyo would be welcomed by many as he has been seen as an instrumental piece in securing ZANU PF’s prolonged stay in power. His political career has been outstanding so far. He is the only person to have won reelection as an independent candidate in parliment representing Tsholotsho, having been booted out of the ZANU PF party, the party which he later rejoined, and is still a part of today.
Whether this will be the end for Moyo or not remains to be seen. The guy has survived before, he is a survivor. But surely, Zimbabwe at large will never come out victorious whichever way this goes. And people will always remember him as the architect of AIPPA and POSA, with Dr. Edison Zvobgo, then the chairman of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, going on the record saying, “I can say without equivocation that this Bill, in its original form, was the most calculated and determined assault on our liberties guaranteed by the Constitution, in the 20 years I served as Cabinet minister” just after Moyo had presented the AIPPA bill to parliament.
This case really stinks. If this is really about corruption, why is he the only one going down (assuming he really is going down)? Even saviour Kasukuwere was accused of corruption by the President himself, having given stands meant for the youths to Magaya, the leader of the PHD church. But in the case of Kasukuwere, nothing much was done, the fact that those corruption charges were brought about at a time when Magaya was facing a possible prison sentence, one that would have crippled his religious standing.
Is this really about corruption, or just some other form of distortion? A way to facilitate the exit of one of ZANU PF’s member. There are just too many questions surrounding this. This might actually be something interesting to follow, one wrong move and ZANU PF may very well dig their own grave. Another question is, will ZANU PF be better off without Moyo. Personally I don’t think so, they brought the guy back for a reason. Surely he is worth more to the party. But then again, there might be a lot of agendas at play here. While we wait for the result, we just might as well conspire. I do love a good conspiracy theory.
