“I’m Not Asking for Too Much”: Madzikanda Defends Divorce Demands Using Global Billionaire Settlements

The high-profile divorce battle between Sonja Madzikanda and Wicknell Chivhayo has taken a new turn — not in the courtroom, but on social media.
In a recent Facebook update that is now circulating widely, Madzikanda has broken her silence on the controversy surrounding her reported divorce settlement demands. And rather than retreat from public scrutiny, she has leaned into it — drawing comparisons with some of the most expensive divorces in global history.
Framing the Narrative Through Global Precedents
In her post, Madzikanda referenced high-profile international divorce settlements to contextualise her claims.
She pointed to Mackenzie Scott, who received approximately $38 billion in her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos — roughly a quarter of his wealth at the time.
She also cited Melinda French Gates, whose separation from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is estimated to have resulted in a settlement worth tens of billions.
And in perhaps the most striking comparison, she invoked Alec Wildenstein, whose divorce remains one of the largest ever recorded, reportedly costing billions.
“This Is About Fairness”
Through these examples, Madzikanda appears to be making a clear argument: that her demands — widely reported to include a US$25 million settlement and ongoing maintenance — should not be viewed in isolation, but within the broader context of wealth distribution in divorce.
Her message suggests that where significant wealth exists, substantial settlements are neither unusual nor unjustified.
Public Reaction Intensifies
The post has only deepened public debate.
Critics argue that comparing Zimbabwean circumstances to billion-dollar divorces in the United States and Europe ignores vast economic differences. Supporters, however, say the principle remains the same — that divorce settlements should reflect the scale of wealth accumulated during a marriage.
A Battle Beyond the Courtroom
What is now clear is that this case is no longer confined to legal filings.
It is being fought in parallel — in public opinion, on social media, and in the broader national conversation about wealth, entitlement, and justice.
As the High Court proceedings continue, Madzikanda’s latest remarks signal that she is not stepping back from the spotlight — but instead, actively shaping the narrative around what she believes she is owed.
