Meet – Prof Charles Maimela, at age 32, he was appointed the youngest and first black Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. To make his accomplishment even more remarkable is fact that he initially applied to study at the same University but did not qualify and that his grandmother used to work there as a cleaner for 40 years.

Professor Charles Maimela holds a Doctor of Laws (LLD), a Master of Laws (LLM) and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of South Africa (UNISA). He joined University of Pretoria’s Department of Private Law as a Lecturer in July 2016 after serving for two years in the Department of Private Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he was a module coordinator for law of persons and family law.

Before this, he served for three years in the Department of Jurisprudence at the University of South Africa. “I am humbled by the appointment. I feel that young people can rise beyond their wildest imagination. This appointment should inspire other young people that with education and hard work, anything is possible,” said Prof Maimela.
