Zimbabwe, Harare. (News Of The South) – Highfield one High School claimed the Harare province National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Stella Tea Under-17 netball tournament title at Mufakose 2 High School on Friday.

The girls from Highfield who went into the tournament as defending champions, edged out Dzivarasekwa 2 High 14-10 in the final to earn the ticket to represent Harare at the national finals pencilled in for Kariba’s Nyamhunga Secondary School in August.

The tournament attracted nine secondary schools from around Harare, among which were George Stark, Epworth, Hatcliffe, Seke 4, St Peters and Mufakose 3.

In a tightly contested final, there was little to choose between the two teams in the first half as they went to the breather tied at seven goals apiece with both defences being outstanding.

Highfield 1 High took the game to their opponents in the second half and the Dzivarasekwa 2 High defence crumbled under pressure letting in seven more goals to concede the match to the defending champions.

On the road to claiming their second title in a row Highfield 1 High had walloped neighbours St. Peters’ Kubatana 25-11, while Dzivarasekwa had accounted for hosts Mufakose 2 High 17-11 in another fiercely contested duel.

For winning the tournament Highfield High won themselves a brand new netball kit courtesy of tournament sponsor Tanganda Tea Company.

Dzivarasekwa pocketed $200 for being runners up while third placed Mufakose 2 got $150.

There were also individual prizes awarded to outstanding players which saw Highfield1 High centre Adlight Chawawa being voted the best player an award which earned her $75 while Dzivarasekwa’s Monalisa Mubhunu and Nicky Semba were named the best shooter and best defender respectively pocketing $50 each.

Tanganda Tea Company Brand Promoter Charity Chinoda said her company would continue supporting netball adding that they were looking at sponsoring the Under-20 girls as well as a way of promoting the development of the sport.

“As Tanganda Tea we are not going to surrender sponsoring the Stella Tea Under-17 tournament and we are thinking of sponsoring the Under-20 girls tournament as well,” said Chinoda adding that the sponsorship package had increased to $55000 from last year’s total package of $50000.
