By Masimba Mukichi.

I lie starving behind the drain breathing the stench of putrid
Green flies crawl over my face, mosquitoes scuttle through
my body after injecting venom in me.
I have bruises and scars from gangs who tore me limb by limb alive.
Suffering is engraved in my head, I long for a hungry eagle’s claws
to crush me to death so I rest, I’m tired as an android.
I’m an innocent child struggling to make ends meet in the streets.
I drink my tears to quench my thirsty.
Mother, why did you give birth to me?
Am I the fruit of a traumatising rape?
Father, why did you seed? Why dump me?
Having a child is not a game of poker
I don’t demand any moon or star
I’m not even worth more than gold
I’m worth a decent home and your love
I don’t want to be a lone fig perched on
top of a tree in the path of a hurricane.
Daily I sit and wave to the sun, kiss the
earth to compensate for the lost love
I crave to hug my mum but can’t find one
to call my own, I’m dying to have a father
but mine doesn’t give a damn.
Does the society care? I want a new home
Why should I suffer this cold neglect?
