Harare, Zimbabwe. (News Of The South) – Harare Metropolitan Province is set to retain the National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) Inter-Provincial Athletics title following the completion of the inter district competitions at Eaglesvale High School Friday which saw some of the athletes who carried the province last year making it into the team.

The national finals are penciled in for Mutare’s Hillcrest College from the 16th to the 17th of March.

Team Harare boasts of athletes who took Zimbabwe to pole position in the Confederation of School Sports Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) held in Lesotho last year.

It is in the 20 years and under age group that Harare is likely to put other provinces to the sword. Arundel’s Rutendo Chimbaru was in devastating form at Eaglesvale winning both the 200m and 400m events. Also making it into team Harare is the Prince Edward duo of Lovejoy Mapfumo and Abraham Mapiravana who won the 400m and 200m events respectively. The trio were gold medal winners at the Cossasa games.

In the 17 years and under age group the Mufakose 3 High duo of Rumbidzai Kavanda and Thandiwe Munaku made it into the team following commanding wins in the 400m hurdles and 1500m respetively before leading their district to victory in the medley and 4x400m relays.

All the seven school districts of Harare took part in the Nash run event which was sponsored by First Mutual Life (FML). First Mutual Life Manging Director, Ruth Ncube said the sponsorship is her company’s way of giving back to the community.

“For First Mutual Life it is payback time because teachers, administrators and education officials are our clients,” said Ncube adding that her company was happy to be partnering Nash in nurturing talent.

A St George’s and Arundel inspired Northern Central pipped the other districts to the title amassing 27 gold , 23 silver and 14 bronze medals claiming the $500 prize courtesy of First Mutual Life.
