MONTMELÓ, Spain — The wait is officially over. In a masterclass of strategy, patience, and vintage driving, Lewis Hamilton claimed his first Formula 1 victory in nearly two years, securing a monumental maiden win for Scuderia Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
The triumph marks Hamilton’s 106th career victory and his first since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix during his final year with Mercedes. At 41 years old, he also etches his name further into history as the sport’s oldest race winner since Jack Brabham in 1970.
Masterful Strategy Outfoxes Mercedes
Starting from second on the grid behind pole-sitter George Russell, Hamilton’s race initially required immense tactical discipline. While Mercedes opted for a traditional two-stop strategy for Russell and championship leader Kimi Antonelli, Ferrari’s pit wall pulled off a tactical masterstroke by committing Hamilton to an aggressive three-stop plan.
The race completely turned on its head on Lap 40 when Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin stopped on track, triggering a Virtual Safety Car (VSC).
Ferrari reacted instantly:
The Pit Stop: Hamilton was brought in under the VSC neutralisation, conserving vital time.
The Tyre Advantage: He emerged still holding the net lead but equipped with fresh, high-grip rubber.
The Breakaway: On a blistering track hitting 50°C (122°F), Hamilton easily managed his degradation and pulled away to finish a commanding 19.5 seconds ahead of the field.
Drama in the Closing Laps
Behind the flying Ferrari, an intense battle for the remaining podium spots unfolded between the Mercedes pair of Russell and Antonelli. With just five laps left, the teenage prodigy Antonelli pulled off a thrilling overtake on Russell to claim second.
However, seconds later, disaster struck for the championship leader as his Mercedes suffered a sudden electrical shutdown, forcing an abrupt retirement. Antonelli’s heartbreak promoted McLaren’s Lando Norris to third, completing an all-British podium alongside Hamilton and Russell for the first time since 1968.
Meanwhile, defending world champion Max Verstappen brought his Red Bull home in fourth place after trying a matching three-stop strategy.
”You helped me achieve this dream”
An emotional Hamilton took to the team radio immediately after crossing the finish line, expressing profound relief and gratitude to his new garage.
”Grazie a tutti, thank you so much. You’ve helped me achieve this dream,” Hamilton told the team. “To my family, I love you. To the fans, thank you for continuing to remind me who I am.”
He later admitted that a difficult first season adjusting to Maranello had brought moments of self-doubt. “I reached a point when I thought, ‘Maybe it is true that you get to a certain point and you lose it.’ But you don’t. It takes perseverance to tap into that inner self.”
With this victory, Hamilton closes the gap in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship, moving to 115 points behind Antonelli’s 156, injecting fresh energy into a thrilling title race.
