Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-The Welshman Ncube led MDC has laid blame upon the government for the tragic death of 14 people in an accident along the Gwanda-Bulawayo road on Thursday.
The 14 died when a haulage truck hit a pothole and crashed into an oncoming commuter omnibus ferrying mourners leading to the deaths and seriously injuring several others.
In a statement released by its spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi, MDC says the government has not seriously considered the issue of the roads which are in a state of disrepair and have become death traps.
“The cause of this accident like many others before it is the negligence and rampant corruption inside President Robert Mugabe’s government”.
“The government and the Ministry of Transport in particular must be brought to book over the horrific deterioration of our roads”.
“The Ministry seems content with letting bodies pile up whilst seeing it fit to spend millions of dollars on useless overseas travels for the President”.
“Potholes are now a permanent feature in just about every road and have become death traps”, he said.
MDC called for accountability to the way in which money amassed by ZINARA through tollgates and levies is utilized since they have been no significant improvements in the state of roads for which that money is intended.
“We hope more concerted effort will be put towards fixing our road network before more precious lives are lost”, said Chihwayi.
President Mugabe recently declared the state of the national roads a national disaster in a move which is expected to see a radical increase in efforts to repair the roads.
Many of the country’s roads have been completely eroded by weather and time and are in need of urgent overhauls though they have been little concerted effort towards such by the responsible authorities.
