Nigeria, Kano. – (News Of The South)A higher education college in the northern Nigerian town Kano was on Wednesday stormed by gunmen who killed 15 students and injured 35 people.
The prime suspect is Boko Haram the Islamist militant group who have repeatedly targeted innocent civilians.
By the time of writing no one had claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to teachers and students the attack commenced at 1pm when the gunmen were said to have burst into a room at the Federal College of Education in Kano and began shooting.
Two explosions were heard one after the other and suicide bombers are believed to be responsible for the explosions.
Police officers who arrived at the crime scene managed to kill two of the attackers.
“We heard several shots from the gate area and after a few minutes we heard an explosion at the theater,” said Sanusi Umar, who lectures in English at the federal government college and watched the attack from a neighboring building.
“The attackers were wearing suits and were running and shooting everywhere.”
Boko Haram insurgents, whose name means “Western education is forbidden”, are fighting to carve out an Islamic state in Nigeria.
In April 200 school girls were abducted from the Chibok village and are still missing.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan continues to face criticism for failing to deal with Boko Haram.
Jonathan in a statement called the Kano raid a “dastardly attack”, adding that “the government continues to do all within its powers to further enhance the ability of … security agencies to prosecute the war against terrorism to a successful conclusion and provide greater security … across the country.”
The Nigerian government said in a written statement on Wednesday that the military killed “several terrorists” late Tuesday as it battled insurgents in the town of Konduga, in northeastern Borno state.
