News of the South HARARE – Government said they will announce what they termed an integrated Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) following a consultative meeting with representatives of the Apex Council and other government workers associations.
In a statement, Public Service Chairman Dr Vincent Hungwe said government acknowledged the genuine difficulties created by distortions in the market and signalled its readiness to press an offer to be discussed at the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC).
“The NJNC meeting will specifically address issues to enhance the capacity of government workers to effectively discharge their duties in their respective sectors,” Dr Hungwe said.
He added that the NJNC will meet not later than Thursday 9 January 2019 to undertake principles that will underpin the allocation of the adjustments.
Dr Hungwe also said there is need to agree on a road map to roll out the establishment of a Public Service Pension Scheme based on a funded and defined benefit modality that is guaranteed by government to protect contributors.
The consultative meeting was in fulfilment of an undertaking given by government towards the end of last year to hold high level engagements with public sector representatives.
In addition to charting a way forward on tackling immediate challenges, the meeting with worker representatives aimed at providing an opportunity for exchange of information on the realities of the national economy, as well as on coordinated approaches to address the challenges facing the country.
