Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-Google is developing an ad-blocking software that will deal with the ever rising scourge of pop ups, auto-play videos etc, which are making browsing a sore.
According to the Wall Street Journal “Google is planning to add an in-built ad blocker to the Chrome Browser and the plan could force sites to give everyone a better experience”.
The Journal reports that both the ‘mobile and desktop versions could soon feature an ad-blocking system that would be turned on by default’.
“But it wouldn’t filter out all ads, only the ones that don’t comply with the Coalition for Better Ads list of standards”
“For instance, auto playing video ads with sound and large sticky ads would be out”, it said.
Browsing is slowly becoming an irritating experience especially on public wifi connections with constant pop us jumping all over and other advertorial pages that open on their own.
However the fact that Google derives much of its revenue from adverts has led some to doubts the legitimacy of the move to block adverts.
Some allege that the company simply needs to block the downloading of ad-blockers it has no control over.
The report says according to StatCounter, Chrome has gobbled up a little bit over 52 percent of the worldwide browser market share and its closest competitor Safari, has 14 percent with the rest struggling with single digit figures.
