German Minister of finance of Hesse, Thomas Schaefer, 54, was found dead.
Authorities said it appeared he killed himself and the state’s governor suggested Sunday that he was in despair over the fallout from the coronavirus crisis.
Mr Schaefer was the state’s finance chief for 10 years. He had been working with many companies all in a bid to try and contain the issue of the coronavirus which was now impacting a lot on the economy.
It seems as though he got overwhelmed and could not handle the pressure anymore as people continued to die and decided to end his own life.
Schaefer was found dead near a railway track on Saturday at Hochheim near Frankfurt.
State governor Volker Bouffier said that Schaefer was worried whether it would be possible to succeed in fulfilling the population’s huge expectations, particularly of financial help.
Bouffier went on to say:
“Today we have to assume that he was deeply worried. He apparently couldn’t find a way out, he was in despair and left us”.
“It is precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed some like him,” he said.
“We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad,” said Bouffier.
Schaefer had long been peddled as a possible successor to Bouffier as they both belonged to Merkel’s centre-right CDU party. The late finance minister leaves behind a wife and two children.
German’s federal and state governments have drawn huge aid packages to cushion the blow of largely shutting down public life to slow the spread of Covid-19.
