Harare, Zimbabwe(News of the South)-New Gambia President Adama Barrow has sacked the country’s army chief whilst sacking a host of other army officials in a move deemed to be power consolidation, according to media reports from the country.
President Barrow relieved General Ousman Badjie who is a known ally of the defeated Jammeh and replaced him with Massaneh Kinteh who is also his military advisor.
Barrow also sacked ten other senior officers among which were directors of operations and intelligence.
The sacked army chief Badjie stood in support of the deposed Jammeh during the tense period after elections thereby putting his credibility into doubt.
A military official said he will be posted to a foreign mission.
The recent move is a continuation of president Barrow’s cleansing of state arms of the residue from Jammeh’s days after last week’s dismissals of the country’s intelligence chief, Yankuba Badjie and the head of the prison system David Colley.
Barrow has since promised to carry out extensive investigations into human rights abuses during Jammeh’s reign after the United Nations accused Gambia’s military of multiple abuses including arbitrary arrest, extra-judicial killings and torture.
