Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-Former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh allegedly stole over $5.4 million in the last weeks of his presidency when he was dithering over accepting election results having lost to an opposition coalition led by Adama Barrow.

Media reports from the small West African nation state that a government report revealed the details of the illicit move by Jammeh as new President Adama Barrow’s administration seeks to unravel the truth.

“A government report this week said the former president and his allies had destroyed Gambia’s economy”.

Revenue collected by the country’s telecommunications company, Gamtel, were diverted to an account at the Central Bank controlled by Jammeh beginning in 2014 according to an investigation by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, according to AP.

“The account accumulated more than $5.4 million, all of which was withdrawn at some point before Jammeh left the country”, said AP.

Jammeh, who has since gone into exile, is separately accused of stealing millions of dollars in the final weeks in power.

New Pres Barrow has since instituted the creation of a truth and reconciliation commission that will also look into cases of human rights abuses perpetrated under Jammeh’s rule.

Barrow has also had former head of the country’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Yankuba Badjie together with eight others arrested whilst also renaming the NIA the State Intelligence Services.
