Tinoonga Mawere|As the nation continues to grapple with the recurring fuel crisis several assertions pertaining to the chaos at service stations have emerged.
While some economic analysts are heaping blame on the government, some sections of the broader society believe panic buying and hoarding are the two major causes of the fuel crisis in the country. Transport Minister Joram Gumbo cited hoarding, panic buying and the dearth of foreign currency as the major factors triggering the fuel crisis.
“I have explained this over and over again, my role is to facilitate the bringing in of fuel into the country and as far as I am concerned I have played my part to ensure there is enough fuel,” Gumbo told reporters in the capital, Harare last week.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week announced new fuel prices in a move that was criticised by political observers.
“Compounded by rampant illegal currency and fuel trading activities, government has today decided on the following corrective measures … with effect from tonight, a fuel pump price of $3,11 per litre for diesel and $3,31 for petrol will come into effect,”said Mnangagwa.
However MDC A deputy chairperson Tendai Biti blamed the government for triggering the fuel crisis.
“Any #fuelincrease is dangerous because of its multiplier effect across the entire economy. We have always insisted that only solution is to #redollerize , de-monetize #bondnote , ring fence RTGS balances , pursue fiscal consolidation & join Rand Monetary Union,” wrote Biti on Twitter.
