Masvingo, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – Ex students and the SDA at Gert NEL primary school in Chatsworth, 34 kilometres from Gutu did the unthinkable when they managed to help their former school build a new library which will be officially opened Thursday November 20 by the Australian high Commissioner.

Also gracing the occasion will be former students, former teachers and ex head Mrs ED Mukundu who played a major role during the transition from all white students school to become one of the best schools in Gutu during early 90s now dominated by local community children.

Speaking to News of the south Editor yesterday, the Gert old students association President Joel Chigome who is based in London said: “This was a dream come true for the current students to have a new library which will benefit students and the community and everyone is welcome to visit the library and read books as education is key”.

Chigome also said his association was just a year old but the team he leads is amazing as they work behind the scenes to make a better future for students and the Library will be one of the best in the region . Books were donated by Australia high commissioner and with the help of current headmaster Mr Tonhodzayi who is doing an amazing job with his team at the school. In 2018 only former students like Mr Kudzai Makuku , Joel Chigome and others donated several football kits, pencils, pens and education accessories Which also helped teachers.

During Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle Gert Nel school was an all white dominanated school and no black students were allowed in class, they could only be in the yard and had to wait for Mr Williams the only black worker during that time. MR Williams would come to the gate to attend to the black students. Soon after Zimbabwe attained independence the Government intervened to ensure that black students were allowed at the school and former head Mrs ED Mukundu worked so hard ro get the school to be what it is today. The school started with only three blocks which accommodated grade one to seven but now the school boasts of an extra five blocks and has 500 children in attendance every year. Speaking from Chatsworth yesterday the headmaster Mr Tonhodzayi was full of praise for the current teachers, community and ex students who work as a team to make this work.
Members of the association are as follows:
