Government of Malawi has put the record straight that its soccer team, the Flames were robbed a clear penalty at the on going Africa Cup of Nations in Basouffam, Cameroon.
Information Minister Gospel Kazako put it on record when responding to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Focus on Africa’s question as to why president Lazarus Chakwera thought of rewarding Malawi National team players with K1 million each if they beat Senegal in the last Group B match.
The Government spokesperson, told BBC that the penalty which the Cameroonian referee overturned could stand on any other day.
“You have seen how we were robbed that clear penalty by that Cameroonian referee otherwise our boys were very determined to beat Africa’s number one team, Senegal, but we were robbed,” said Kazako.
Commenting on assertions that the money to reward the players could be used in procurement of some essential basic necessities, Kazako blasted the BBC reporter not to spice her agenda with some fragrances of imperialism.
“We accept that we are poor but we have our own culture of doing things in our country to show appreciation for what others have done and it is not only president Lazarus Chakwera who has given things of value.
“This story is smelling some fragrance of imperialism of some nature because these things happens in America, UK and elsewhere, in our culture we even give gifts at funerals, weddings or engagements,” Kazako responded.
Meanwhile, the Flames have a high probability of progressing to the Afcon’s round of 16 depending on the results of matches in other groups which will be winding up their fixtures on Wednesday and Thursday.
