Lilongwe, Malawi. (News of The South) – The Malawi national football team coach Ron Van Heugeneden also known as RVG is facing uncontrollable criticism from all angles of the soccer enthusiasts in the country following miserable displays by the country’s national teams in all continental competitions the teams participated in.

Over the weekend the Malawi national football teams also known as the Flames, senior team and the Under-23 were booted out of the African cup of nations by the Zambian and Morocco national teams in games which many pundits described as winnable.

Despite the Flames embattled coach taking the national team to his native city of Brussels in Belgium for preparations for the lost games many of observers described the systems of play deployed by the coach as retrogressive.
The only lifeline for the Flames coach came when the Morocco national team coach, Herve Renard asked Malawians to maintain RVG as the national team head coach despite his failure to steer the team to the finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

These remarks were made during the press conference after the Atlas Lions of Morocco held the Flames to a goalless draw in their final group B qualifying match at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Friday.

The Atlas Lions qualified for the finals having collected unassailable points while Malawi finished bottom of the group.

Renard, a double Afcon winner said building a team needs time hence the need to be patient with RVG whose contract has now expired.

“The coach is doing a good job and I hope he will continue on the same way (coaching the team) because sometimes building takes one or more years so there is a need for patience,” Renard said.

The French tactician further pointed out that it is very cruel to expect the Flames to sail through to the finals from the group B which had very strong teams like Morocco and Cameroon.
Elsewhere, the Taifa Stars of Tanzania also popularly known as Magufuli boys have for the first time qualified for the Afcon finals after beating the Cranes of Uganda by three goals to nil.
