London, UK (News of The South) – The inaugural First Ladies of African Impact & Resilience (FLAIR) Summit, held on June 16 -17 and will end 18 , 2025, in London, concluded today with a powerful demonstration of cross-border allyship and a collective commitment to reimagining systems for a more equitable world. The summit, organized under the Elevate Africa initiative and driven by the ethos of “Women Allying Women,” brought together an impressive array of First Ladies, global leaders, and influential women from diverse sectors to champion women’s empowerment and youth development across Africa.
A central theme woven throughout the two-day event was the transformative power of women leading with alignment and purpose. As articulated by Tonye Idaminabo FRSA, the spirit of “Women Allying Women” was not merely observed, but actively demonstrated, illustrating how strategic and substantive backing among women can catalyze significant societal shifts.
A Strong Nigerian Presence and Diplomatic Depth:
A significant highlight was the strong representation of nine (9) First Ladies from Nigeria, signaling the increasing influence of women in public leadership on the continent. Among them, H.E. Ambassador Prof. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, First Lady of Kwara State, was particularly recognized for her unique blend of diplomatic expertise and deep-rooted community service, embodying the summit’s vision of impactful leadership.
Global Voices for Inclusion and Power:
The FLAIR Summit extended its reach beyond national borders, welcoming global leaders whose contributions are actively reshaping the landscape of inclusion and power. Notably, Isha Johansen, the pioneering first female President of the Sierra Leone Football Association and a former Executive Committee Member of CAF, captivated attendees with her journey of redefining possibilities for women in sports, leadership, and institutional governance.
Dr. Nero Ughwujabo, former Special Adviser to the UK Prime Minister on Social Justice, Young People, and Opportunities, underscored the critical role of inclusive policy design in fostering equitable societies, drawing from his ongoing work at The Prince’s Trust.
Adding to the robust discourse were Baroness Sandy Verma and Dr. Yvonne Thompson CBE DL FCL, RSA, RA, SGCW, KCL NED. These two distinguished women, whose leadership has consistently operated at the nexus of strategy, governance, and legacy, reinforced the undeniable truth that transformation becomes inevitable when women lead with shared vision and intentionality. Dr. Thompson, as a co-founder of the FLAIR Summit, played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to fruition.
Beyond the Discussions: A Call to Action for Sustainable Development:
Beyond the inspiring speeches and panel discussions, the FLAIR Summit was designed as a platform for tangible action. Aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the summit aimed to:
* Unveil Cross-Sectoral Initiatives: First Ladies presented country-led solutions and initiated joint action plans to address critical development gaps in healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership, with a primary focus on empowering women and youth.
– Foster Strategic Partnerships: High-level engagements with decision-makers, investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers were facilitated to reinforce trade, investment, and diplomatic connections between Africa and global players.
– Explore Critical Themes: Discussions delved into redefining women’s empowerment, industrialization, digital innovation, sustainability, and public-private collaboration, with a special emphasis on boosting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and enhancing regional integration.
– Celebrate Achievements: The summit featured the prestigious FLAIR Awards Gala Dinner, recognizing transformative initiatives led by African First Ladies and visionary leaders across various sectors, including technology, healthcare, education, STEM, politics, and climate change.
The FLAIR Summit served as a powerful testament to the burgeoning collective power of women in shaping Africa’s future. It was not merely a conference but a “continental call to action,” as described by organizers, marking a new chapter in pan-African collaboration where First Ladies are actively contributing to policy development and grassroots impact. The sentiment echoed throughout the summit was clear: when women come together with intention, the world does not simply observe; it begins to shift.
